How do I clean a memory foam mattress?
If you look after your memory foam matress, and keep a clean sheet on it at all times, you should find that it will rarely, if ever, need cleaning. However, there are times when you will need to clean a memory foam matress, and it’s worth knowing the best way to do this. The process is quite simple:
First take a vacuum cleaner and clean the whole memory foam matress with the soft brush attachment, removing all visible dust and dirt particles. If necessary, take a soft hand brush and brush down and parts that are dirty or dusty.
Stand the foam matress in the bath (or outside if it’s a nice day, and you have some clean ground to use), and spray it all over with a mixture of one part fabric cleaner and two parts water. Shake the memory foam matress to remove any excess liquid.
Leave it to stand for a while. I find around half an hour is fine, and then rinse off with clean water. If the memory matress is wet, gently squeeze it to bring out the absorbed water. Don’t squeeze too hard, and don’t wring the foam, as this can permanently damage it.
Now spray it again with a mixture of one part vinegar to four parts water, and then rinse it off again as before.
Ideally, you should now leave the memory foam matress in a warm room to dry. If it’s a warm sunny day, you can leave it outside, but be careful of dirt, dust, leaves, etc, as these can stick to the damp foam matress, making it as dirty as it was before.
If this is not practical, place a fan heater near the matress, and use that to dry the memory foam. A hair dryer can be used, but this can take quite a long time, and can be dangerous if you get the foam too hot. I don’t really recommend this if you can avoid it.
Make sure the memory foam matress is properly dry before you put it back on the bed.
If you follow these guidelines carefully, you’ll have years of good use out of your memory foam matress.

Are memory foam matress toppers as good as proper memory foam matresses?
Although the benefits of sleeping on a memory foam matress are quite clear, you might still be bothered by the fact that they are a little more expensive than normal spring matresses. Many people are tempted into buying memory foam matress toppers (also known as memory foam matress pads) instead. However, before you do so, it’s important to know the difference between the two, and to judge carefully if a foam matress pad is worth the money.
A memory foam matress topper is a piece of foam, similar to a full memory foam matress, but not as thick. You place the memory pad on top of your normal spring matress, and it is supposed to give the same benefits as a proper memory foam matress. The truth is though, that although this can happen, it doesn’t usually.
For people who already have a good matress, and just need something to improve their sleep a little, a topper might be a good idea. It won’t give you all the benefits of a memory foam matress, but it will do a moderately good job at a lower price.
However, you have to remember that a foam matress topper is only a pad of a few inches thick, and does not have the full performance of a real foam memory matress. When you lie on it, you’re not going to get the support that you would have from ten inches of real memory foam, you’ll only get the shallow support that the thinner matress topper offers.
Also, to get the best out of a memory foam matress, it really needs to go on a firm base. If you take a relatively thin topper and place it on top of a spring matress, you’re defeating the purpose of the memory foam matress altogether. The full benefits of a memory matresses are felt when the memory foam goes right down to the firm base below it. If the topper sits on a soft or word out matress, it won’t give the support you expect, and will not help you sleep better. The memory foam topper will just sag where the underlying matress sags, leaving you as uncomfortable as before.
So, buying a memory foam matress topper is really false economy, as you’re not likely to see the benefits of a real memory foam matress, and you might as well save your money. You’re far better off investing in a proper memory foam matress and getting a really good night’s sleep.
See you next time,
Dan

What is the best memory foam matress?
As I explained in my article on what to look for when buying a memory foam matress, if you’re going to buy a memory matress, then it’s worth getting the very best one you can afford. Not only will you sleep better, but it will last for many years, unlike the budget foam matresses that will probably wear out and compress in less than a year.
So, what brands should you look for? Well, after doing a lot of research, it seems that the very best foam matresses are those made by Sleepeezee, Sealy and Millbrook. These three manufacturers have been in the sleeping business for a very long time, and they make quality products. Our first bed when we got married was a Sealy, and it’s still good and strong a couple of decades later. Even the original spring matresses are still in good condition, although we use the memory foam matresses now of course.
There are other makes around, including one well-known make whose name begins with a “T” (but whose name I don’t want to mention in case anyone from the company reads this article and gets upset with me), but you’re really paying for the name here. You aren’t necessarily getting a better foam matress by buying theirs. Go for one of the three I mentioned, and you know you’re getting high quality without paying more than you need.
I just had a look whilst writing this article, and I found that you can buy an excellent memory foam matress from Sleepeezee, Sealy and Millbrook for quite a reasonable price nowadays. It’s been a year or so since we bought ours, and the prices have come down since then. Click here to see where to buy a memory foam matress at up to 40% off, with free delivery.
Looks like there’s never been a better time to invest in a memory foam matress, and give yourself the luxury of a really good night’s sleep.
Hopefully you’ll be experiencing great nights of deep sleep by the time I write my next article about the memory foam matress!
Until then,
Dan

What do I look for when buying a memory foam matress?
When you start to look around to see which memory foam matress to buy, you’ll find a fair variation in price. You might be tempted to buy the cheapest, but this isn’t necessarily the best option.
Having spent quite a bit of time checking memory foam matresses out before I bought mine, I can tell you that there’s a big difference between the brands out there. I’ve spoken to a few people, and have built up a reasonable amount of experience (mine and theirs) about what to look for when buying a memory foam matress.
I guess the most important point I need to tell is why you shouldn’t be tempted by a budget-priced memory foam matress. I know the top-of-the-range ones aren’t cheap, but they really are worth the money. The main reason for this is actually quite simple.
The foam that’s used to make memory foam matresses has spaces (technically called “cells”) which allow the air to move through the matress. In a good memory foam matress, there will be an even distribution of small to medium sized cells. This gives the air movement, whilst allowing the memory matress to do its job.
A cheap memory foam matress will be made out of a foam that has a lower density (ie it weighs less for the size), and these have less cells, but bigger ones. When you first get one of these you will be pleased with it, because you’ll sink in comfortably. The problems start a while down the line when you find that the lack of adequate foam under you means that you keep sinking until you reach the bottom. At that point, you’re basically ready to throw out that budget matress in disgust.
Truth is, you may not even get to that stage. The lower quality foam used in budget memory foam matresses wears out quickly, and in less than a year, your matress could be falling apart. You may only realise this when you feel a sagging in the middle, or you may even see it disintegrate around the edges.
What you’ll find is that the money you saved by buying a cheap foam matress will be lost many times over by the fact that you have to replace it after a year or so. By contrast, a good quality memory foam matress can last for ten or fifteen years.
The well-known brands of memory foam matress like Sleepeezee, Sealy and Millbrook use a high quality foam that has a better distribution of smaller cells that allows the foam matress to keep its shape for much longer. Not only do these keep their shape well, they stay as firm and supportive as they did when you got them, so you end up sleeping well for years.
This advice might be difficult for some people to accept, because high quality memory foam matresses can be expensive, but they really are worth the extra. I’ve gone into this a lot over the past year or so, and after what I’ve read and heard, I wouldn’t even think of buying anything other than a top-notch memory foam matress in the future.
Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for more articles on memory foam matresses.
See you soon,
Dan

What are the benefits of using a memory foam matress?
I assume you’ve either read my article about what a memory foam matress is, or at that you know already, so now it’s time to talk about the benefits of sleeping on one, and the difference you will notice when you wake up.
As I mentioned in my first post here, I used to wake up in the mornings feeling drowsy and fatigued. Even though I’d slept the whole night, I felt like I still needed a few hours more. Needless to say, this wasn’t a great way to go into work, especially when you have to spend the day moving boxes of fruit around, and smiling at customers. I’m a pretty cheerful fellow by nature, but when you’re dog-tired, it’s hard to keep the smile up.
From asking around, I discovered that I wasn’t alone in my tiredness. Actually, it seems to be a very common problem. Trouble was, no-one seemed to have an answer to it. I even went to the doctor and had tests for sleep disorders, all of which came back false. So I was back at square one, sleeping the whole night through, but waking up exhausted.
It was around this time that I came across memory foam matresses. I think it was an article somewhere on the web that caught my eye. As I read about them, I thought it was worth finding out more. I checked out some memory foam matress sites, and found a big variation in price and quality. That was when I realised I needed to do some proper research to find out if they really worked, and if so, how to choose which one to buy.
Luckily, I mentioned it to a friend of mine, who told me he had one. We had a long conversation about it, and he told me where he bought his (click here to see where he bought his at 40% off, with free delivery).
I did some research, and ended up buying one from the same site as him, and I sure am glad I did! The benefits of using a memory foam matress were both immediate and dramatic. The very first night I used it, I slept like I haven’t done since I was a boy. I woke up the following morning feeling refreshed and ready to face anything.
The next few nights were even better. As I worked off a backlog of poor sleeping, I felt better each day, until I was on top of the world.
Not only that, but my whole body felt better. Instead of a dull ache in my back, I was supple and pain-free. Apparently normal spring matresses can give pressure on isolated points in the back, which causes pain. A memory foam matress distributes the body weight more evenly, so you don’t get the aches and pains.
I’ve since found out that memory foam matresses have even more benefits for people who suffer from other ailments as well. They vastly reduce the chances of getting any of the following…
- rheumatism
- neck pain
- back pain
- sciatic pain
- aching joints
- arthritis
- circulatory problems
Not bad for a piece of foam eh?
So now you know the benefits of a memory foam matress. In my next article, I’ll tell you more about them, so keep reading.
Bye for now,
Dan
